Luis “Lou” Pomales
Radio Host, Cultural Advocate, and Founder of La Esquina Latina
Luis “Lou” Pomales is a longtime radio host and cultural advocate whose philosophy has always been simple: “It’s not about me, it’s about the music.” Since 1974, Lou has helped bring Latino culture into the homes of WPKN’s listening audience through La Esquina Latina, a program devoted to the cultural significance of Latin American music, lyrics, rhythms, and traditions. Presented primarily in English with occasional Spanish, La Esquina Latina highlights Puerto Rican and Afro-Cuban music, Latin jazz, and other Indigenous and Latin American influences. The program’s mission is rooted in cultural consciousness, dignity, and respect, and it continues to serve as an important platform for preserving and celebrating Latino heritage. Over the decades, La Esquina Latina has featured interviews with celebrated musicians, artists, and community leaders, including Eddie Palmieri, Chucho Valdés, Bobby Sanabria, Larry Harlow, Poncho Sánchez, Arturo Sandoval, José Feliciano, Jimmy Bosch, Plena Libre, and many others. Through these conversations and musical selections, Lou has helped connect audiences to the richness, history, and continued evolution of Latino music. La Esquina Latina has been part of WPKN for decades, and Lou is currently celebrating his 50th year in radio. Since 1985, Edwin Muñiz has also been an integral part of the program, joining Lou in a shared commitment to preserving Latino culture through music, storytelling, and community connection. Lou’s credentials include touring with a U.S. Navy Band as a drummer across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East; serving as WPKN Program Director in 1979 and 2005; earning an undergraduate degree in Journalism and Communications from the University of Bridgeport in 1980; and earning a graduate degree in Organizational Psychology from the University of Hartford in 2013. ¡Que viva la música!
